WOMEN SPORTS IN I.R.IRAN
Date: 3 November 2003

The active participation of women in the Islamic Revolution and their undeniable role in its victory is amongst the most outstanding characteristics of the Revolution.

In the wake of the victory of the glorious Islamic Revolution, competent women sport administrators with top university qualifications embarked upon managerial positions to serve women sports administration in this country.

In the course of the history of this country, women have always respected the cultural values prevailing in their society and have never failed to contribute to the improvement and progress of social conditions. One of the objectives in the women of our society has
been guiding them to a more physically active lifestyle; in order to minimize inactivity and complications of inactivity and de-conditioning.

Before the Islamic Revolution, no facilities was offered to the greater part of the women of our country with a strong belief in Islamic disciplines to participate in sports activities while observing the cultural and Islamic rules; so only a minority of the women who had low belief in Islamic values participated in sports.

The women sport activities in the years after the victory of the Islamic Revolution particularly since 1986 developed on a progressive trend with the Islamic values observed in all the sport activities.

So our great tasks were:1-dedicating or even building special sport halls for the female athletes where no man is allowed to enter; and thus women can participate in any field of sports comfortably; and also providing for them adequate sport equipment.

2-Training specialized personnel including female coaches, referees, staff with university grades, managers, physiologists, physiotherapists, sport physicians, nurses, and so on.

Currently there are 35 women sport societies, 28 provincial bureaus, and 4495 women sport boards in different provinces, which function under the authority of the Deputy of Women Sports of the Physical Education Organization.

There are 30544 female coaches and 15616 female referees active in different fields of women sports in the country.

Participation in international events as a means to convey a message of peace and fraternity has contributed to display the role of Iranian women in global sport.
Muslim women have been able to achieve success in sport and cultural fields consistent with their religious values.

To further achieve the objectives they are pursuing three editions of Muslim Women Sport Games and in parallel with these events, arrangements have been made for the Iranian women to attend international sport science congresses and seminars. Meanwhile Iran has been host to many foreign coaches, instructors who have been invited to Iran to assist female athletes, coaches and referees in their endeavor to promote their scientific and technical knowledge and skills.

Iranian female athletes have achieved 105 international medals in their sport carriers.

The number of national championships has been limited to eight events in 1986 compared to 29 events in 2001;(72% growth during 15 years, 5% annual increase).

In 1986, there were only 34 teams participating in National Women Sports Championship which have increased to 3298 teams in the year 2001.(97 times, each year 6.4 times greater than the year before).

The number of athletes participated in the National Women Sport Competitions was 391 in 1986 and 38069 in 2001.(97 times, 6.4 times annually)

3-Making sports one of the top priorities in the life of the women of our country.

We encourage sport participation in schools, through radio and television, newspapers, public and scientific journals, universities, administrations and so on.
We have conducted many educational programs for the women of our society through the various ways mentioned above; and also we have conducted many researches in the Deputy of Women sports (other than the researches done by other administrations or persons).

This deputy completed 81 researches.
