Message
from the Founding President - 2000 millenium issue
The Asian Federation of Sports
Medicine has been established for ten years. At the
beginning of the 21st Century, this 10th anniversary
celebration meeting in the 3rd AFSM Congress in Oman
has a special meaning in taking stock of past
achievement and planning for future development.
In the past ten years, the friendly
relationship and academic exchanges between different
federations of sports medicine were advanced.
Relationship and cooperation between FIMS and AFSM
were extremely enhanced. These achievements were
brilliant. Professor KM Chan, as the founding
Secretary-General and the current President of AFSM,
made great contribution in this regard.
Sports Medicine is a discipline of
medical science with integration of theory and
practice. The aim of this specialty is to study the
pathological effects of exercise or physical
activities and its deficiency accordingly and to
improve the efficiency of medical treatment,
prevention, rehabilitation and sports training. Most
people believe that the 21st Century is an era of
information. The lifestyle of people, particularly the
diet and physical activity, will be changing greatly
because of the high-speed development of science and
technology. The lifestyle related diseases will be
significantly increased, such as neurovascular
diseases, obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis,
osteoarthritis etc. Obviously, practicing regular
exercise is scientifically one of the best ways to
solve these problems. In addition, competitive sports
as a branch of sporting culture will continue to
develop. All these require sound medical care and high
technical supervision. Sports Medicine, as a rising
scientific discipline in the coming years, will have a
very prosperous and bright future.
In the march into the new
millennium, I sincerely hope that AFSM will contribute
to improve the academic standard of sports medicine
and communication with the other continental groups.
The 3rd Asian Congress of Sports Medicine 2000 in Oman
will be a good start.
